Thinking about Canadian PR? Maybe it’s time to learn French!

Canada has been giving priority to French Language Proficiency as a category-based selection in Express Entry. We’ve seen a significant rise in Express Entry category-based draws for French language proficiency, with many more candidates being selected than before.

What’s the trend?

To date, in 2025 alone, 25,500 invitations have been issued in five draws. The most recent draw on September 4, 2025, had a cutoff score of 446. So far this year, the lowest score we’ve seen was 379 in the March 21 draw, while the highest was 481 on August 8, 2025. By this trend, we can project a continued priority of IRCC to increase the Francophone population outside Quebec.

Why does this matter?

We see that compared to general draws, the French category gives a clear advantage to those who can demonstrate strong French skills. It can increase your chances of selection under Express Entry and lead to becoming a Canadian Permanent Resident faster. It can boost up to 50 extra points even if we consider it as a Secondary Language. You have an advantage in getting invited if you are proficient in both French and English.

Know if you are eligible for the French language proficiency category

  • Express Entry Eligibility: To be eligible for the French Language Proficiency Category, you must be in the Express Entry Pool by meeting at least one of the following programs: Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), or Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST).
  • Language Requirement: You are required to have a minimum TEF/TCF score of CLB 7 in all Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadien (NCLC) 4 language abilities (reading, writing, listening, and Speaking)

The best thing about this category is that there is no restriction to have certain occupation work experience as long as you are eligible to be in the Express Entry Pool.
